An Affirmation for Ascension Day (?)

On Ascension Day a service was broadcast on the Circuit YouTube channel where Steve Levett presented an Affirmation of Faith crafted with the day in mind. (The service can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3nkIuy6JkE). The Affirmation was presented in two forms. Firstly as a clear declaration of faith, attempting to express something of what we believe the Ascension reveals and confirms. Secondly is was presented in a slightly edited form simply by adding the word ‘Do’ to the beginning of each phrase and ending it with a question mark. This indicated that our own understanding of the meaning of the Ascension is something we might still need to wrestle with. Here is the affirmation in the tow forms.

We believe Jesus is ascended

We believe Jesus is the lamb upon the throne, the rightful seat of God, worshipped and adored

We believe Jesus is the name above all names, at whom every knee should bow, because he humbled himself even to death, was raised and overcame sin and death

We believe Jesus is victor, having overcome and defeated sin and death, and will bring all sin and death under his control

We believe that Jesus intercedes for his people in presence of the Father, who upholds them by his power and love

We believe Jesus sends the Holy Spirit on his disciples, to empower them for witness

We believe Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead

We believe Jesus will bring the kingdom in all its fullness, and his reign will have no end. Amen

The affirmation as a series of questions: Do we believe?
